Several Factors Build Momentum

Another wave of enthusiasm is sweeping through the business community over the new high-tech economy that appears to be taking root along the northern Rio Grande corridor of New Mexico.

There is no precise definition but it has its own terms biotechnology, entrepreneurial growth, fiber optic bandwidth and complexity science to name a few.

Two "mesas" frequently are mentioned by the boosters: Info Mesa is what Wired magazine dubbed the region in an article published last summer; Biotechmesa.net is a portal launched just last week.

"It's more than momentum; we're riding a crest," said Cathie Zacher, president of the quasi-governmental Santa Fe Economic Development Inc. "The information technology cluster is growing right along with the biotechnology cluster. …
