Traffic, Parking Spur Concern at School

Traffic problems at East San Jose Elementary School have eased somewhat, Principal Richard Baldonado says, but not enough to convince him "the kids are completely safe."

The school is on Broadway SE, just north of Gibson. Parents, neighbors and school officials complained about speeders, on-street parking that made oncoming traffic hard to see and the lack of crossing guards.

A substitute teacher was killed in August as she drove into traffic on Broadway a day after a parent told Baldonado that drivers were not slowing down in the school zone.

The city since then assigned two crossing guards to the school, Baldonado said, increased Albuquerque Police Department's presence and is looking at putting in no-parking zones. …
