Senate Leader Plots Path To Stalemate.(Editorial Page)


Perfectly fair isn't necessarily perfect. Democratic leaders are pushing for a fair division of power in a Senate where there will be only one more vote on the Republican side than on the Democrat's side of the aisle. It would be a blueprint for stalemate at best, disaster at worst.

The heavy lifting in the Senate is done in committee, where the majority party holds the chairmanship, wields a partisan edge in votes and commands a larger staff with more resources.

Columnist David Broder suggests elsewhere on this page that equity would best be sought in allocation of staff and funding, giving both parties equal muscle in researching and drafting legislation. …
