Red River Cleanup To Be Worth Wait.(Opinion)

Finally, there is hope that northern New Mexico's Red River will again run clean. Under the terms of a new permit issued Friday, the federal Environmental Protection Agency will require Questa's Molycorp mine to stop the estimated 7,000 tons of pollutants a year from seeping through its waste rock piles and going into the river.

Environmental activists say the change in water quality on what was one of the state's better trout streams should be tremendous.

Even Molycorp officials concede that the new requirement will "very definitely" improve the river.

A mine spokesman said this week the company already has begun work on a system of drainage ditches that will carry the seepage into the mine's water treatment plant, where it can be cleaned up and then returned to the river. …
