I'm sure you've read a book and rushed to tell someone breathlessly, "You've got to read this."

I know. You're thinking this book-page guy is a poor man's Oprah Winfrey. Call me what you will, but I still want to recommend not one, but two recent books. One I've just finished. It carries the catchy title of "Beethoven's Hair" by Russell Martin.

The other I'm deep into now is Yo'av Karny's "Highlanders."

Both books are nonfiction. Both are journalistic in nature.

"Beethoven's Hair" is a compelling read. It is one of the best, most intriguing books I have read in a long time.

Martin's book is remarkable for being so complete and yet so compact in telling a true story. …
