In "Eu'lo.gy," a memoir by Mary Bergan Blanchard, there's a poignant line near the end of the book: "We grieved for a piece of ourselves that most people in this world could never understand."

Blanchard's comment comes after seeing the burnt remains of the convent where she had spent much of her religious life as a Sister of Mercy in Albany, N.Y.

The memoir begins and ends with Blanchard preparing for her mother's funeral, an event triggering a multitude of memories about her 20 years as a nun. …
