That's the approach New Mexico's Class AAAAA coaches are taking toward the 2000-2001 boys basketball season.

Hobbs has reasserted itself as the state's premier program, winning back-to-back AAAA championships in coach Russ Gilmore's first two campaigns.

The Eagles have amassed 13 titles in all, more than any other program in New Mexico. Can Hobbs make it three in a row, increase its total to 14 and win the state's first Class AAAAA title in March?

If preseason coaches' polls are any indication, the answer is a resounding, "Yes!"

Fifteen of the 17 coaches who voted in the Journal's preseason poll picked the Eagles as New Mexico's No. 1 Class AAAAA team. Hobbs outpointed No. 2 Sandia for the top spot by a wide 31-point margin, with third-ranked Alamogordo and No. 4 Cibola even further back. …
