* Federal grant lends a $1.1 million helping hand to 46 struggling N.M. schools

Eight poorly performing Albuquerque schools will share $196,740 in federal tax money targeted to raise achievement.

The federal Title I education grants are part of $1.1 million being distributed to 46 schools statewide by the Department of Education. All of the money will be spent in schools that have been identified as potential candidates for state takeover because of low student achievement.

Seven Albuquerque schools Eugene Field, Kit Carson, Lowell, Valle Vista and Whittier elementaries and Harrison and Polk middle schools will each receive $25,000. …
