Domenici Seeks To Slow Sandia Boundary Resurvey Case.(Editorial Page)(Column)

The train was beginning to move again in Sandia Pueblo's long effort to advance its claim to the west face of the Sandia Mountains. It was, at least, until Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., stepped in to apply the brakes perhaps wary of the pueblo gaining material advantage in the final weeks of the Clinton administration.

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals last month turned back an appeal by Bernalillo County and the Sandia Mountain Coalition of a 1998 federal court order widely viewed as a tactical victory by Sandia Pueblo. The order instructed Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt to consider anew whether the survey setting the eastern boundary of the Sandia Pueblo Reservation at the first foothills of the Sandias, rather than at Sandia Crest, was in error with all ambiguity in the law and record resolved in favor of the pueblo. …
