Finance Ace To Advise Senate GOP.(Editorial Page)(Column)

Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, the newly elected Senate minority leader, has scored a coup by hiring David Harris to be one of his top advisers for the upcoming legislative session.

Harris, 56, of Albuquerque was Republican Gov. Gary Johnson's top budget adviser before retiring from state government four months ago after 27 years as a public employee.

Harris "seemed like a great guy to get," Ingle said in an interview. "He's going to be working exclusively for the Republican Senate in all areas of government, but primarily budget work."

Democrats, who maintained control of the Legislature in the Nov. 7 general election, will enjoy a 24-18 majority over Republicans in the Senate in the upcoming session, which begins Jan. 16. Developing a budget to pay for state operations and public education in the next fiscal year will be the primary focus of the 60-day session. …
