We skated up to the brink of closure then the Florida Supreme Court blew the 2000 presidential election wide open again. Even that didn't hold, however, as the U.S. Supreme Court stepped in and sent the case ricocheting off in a fresh direction.

In a bitterly divided 4-3 ruling, Florida's high court Friday ordered recounts in all 67 Florida counties of some 45,000 ballots for which no vote registered for president. But on Saturday, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a divided 5-4 decision, stayed the Florida high court's ruling pending a hearing Monday.

The Florida court had also ordered added to the certified total those recounts already carried out but rejected in the election certification by Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris. …
