* A 93-year-old man who participated in first celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe plays special role in 76th annual procession

Jose E. Andrade Sr. chuckled when asked if he remembered the inaugural Our Lady of Guadalupe fiesta in Albuquerque's South Broadway neighborhood.

Andrade Sr., who turns 94 this week, walked in the first fiesta procession in 1924. And he plans to attend today's 76th annual celebration of the patroness of the Americas at St. Francis Xavier.

As a special reader at the Mass, Andrade Sr. will retell in Spanish the Blessed Virgin Mary's four appearances in 1531 to a poor Indian, Juan Diego, near Mexico City.

Last year a standing room only crowd estimated at about 500 packed the modest, cream-colored stucco church at Broadway and Pacific SE.

During one of the apparitions, a dark-skinned Virgin Mary told Diego to have a church built on the site. …
