* Research Expo grew out of mentoring program in high school's science academy

Amanda Kraft turned her fascination with the river into a search for food sources of the endangered silvery minnow.

Kraft, a Rio Rancho High School sophomore, gathered water at Alameda, Rio Rancho and the Rio Grande Nature Center, and determined there was a lack of living organisms that the minnow requires to eat.

"Rio Rancho and the Rio Grande Nature Center didn't have anything," Kraft said. "Just sand and salt."

Hers was one of 220 projects entered in Rio Rancho High School's first Research Expo on Thursday. …
