Lab Gets Fed Aid for Fire Cleanup.

The balance of a $342 million federal appropriation was made available Friday for cleanup and building at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the wake of the Cerro Grande Fire.

The Department of Energy released $203.5 million Friday. The department had released $138 million in May for emergency response and flood damage control during and after the fire.

The Cerro Grande Fire, which destroyed 47,000 acres and more than 400 Los Alamos residences, began as a prescribed burn set May 4 by the National Park Service.

Lab officials have estimated that the fire caused $340 million in damages at LANL.

Most of the $138 million paid in May went to replace fire alarms, fire hoses and more than 100 power poles. …
