Outdoor spas a popular addition for homeowners

Picture yourself outdoors, soaking in a tub of swirling hot water under a star-filled sky, the vapor trail from your breath disappearing into the mid-winter night.

This used to be a rite reserved for the well-to-do but not anymore. As more and more people have enjoyed the spa experience at health clubs or in jetted bathtubs in their own homes, they have decided to purchase a spa of their own, said Tom Gervais. He is president and owner of Leisure Time Pool Tables and Hot Tubs, and Carefree Hot Tubs and Pool Tables, both in Albuquerque, and the Pool and Spa Mart in Santa Fe.

The technology and design of spas, or hot tubs as they are sometimes called, have improved recently. Most major manufacturers now make models that range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the size, number of pumps and jets, and special features. The features keep expanding, and include a built-in speaker system, TV monitor, video player, AM-FM radio, compact disc player and underwater lights that can change colors to suit the mood. …
