Student Sex Crime Bill Purposely Broad, Sen. Says.(Legislature)

SANTA FE An Albuquerque Democrat wants to make it a crime for anyone who works at or even volunteers at a New Mexico school to have a sexual relationship with a minor student.

"I am casting a wide net here, and I am doing it with a purpose," bill sponsor Sen. Cisco McSorley said Friday.

The measure, McSorley said, is to target sexual predators who use school jobs to exploit underage students.

However, opponents warned members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday that the bill is vague and dangerous.

State laws already make it a second-degree felony for a schoolteacher, coach or counselor to have a sexual relationship with a student under age 16. …
