Aragon's Measure Fails by One Vote

SANTA FE The Senate on Friday defeated a bill to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico despite last-minute political maneuvering by Democrats.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Manny Aragon, D-Albuquerque, failed Thursday by three votes. Democrats took advantage of a Senate rule to seek a revote Friday.

Sen. Linda Lopez, D-Albuquerque, who wasn't present for Thursday's session, voted for the bill Friday. But another supporter was absent during the vote, and three Democrats joined all 18 Senate Republicans in opposing the bill. It failed 21-20.

Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, who voted to repeal the death penalty Thursday, said he was in a meeting to discuss emergency relief funds for northern New Mexico counties when the Senate voted on the death penalty bill. …
