Painting Once Again In the Correct Hands.(Editorial Page)


Good news was topped with more good news in the recent return of Oscar E. Berninghaus' painting, "Pueblo Indian Woman of Taos," which was stolen from the Albuquerque Museum in 1989.

The road to recovery for this important painting by one of New Mexico's premier artists began in January when it resurfaced on the art market. Berninghaus was one of the six founding members of the Taos Society of Artists early last century.

An elderly man reportedly told a Cleveland-area art dealer he had bought the painting at a flea market and wanted to sell it. When a different art dealer and an expert on the Taos Society looked into purchasing the painting, they discovered it had been reported stolen and contacted the FBI and the Albuquerque Museum. …
