Jail Official Took Case to New Judge

A convicted Albuquerque domestic abuser had more than two-thirds of his original court sentence tossed out after his stepcousin a jail official arranged to have the sentence reconsidered by a judge, court records show.

The Metropolitan Court judge who did the reconsidering wasn't the same judge who had passed the original sentence against 34-year-old Gabriel Beauchamp. And Bernalillo County Detention Center court liaison Louie Maldonado, who worked on the reconsideration, didn't tell the judge that Beauchamp was a relative.

Beauchamp apparently also isn't one of the prisoners whose cases Maldonado is responsible for handling.

Maldonado is now the subject of a jail internal investigation, and Beauchamp whose lighter sentence was recently ruled null and void is now back in a jail community-custody program. …
