Toots Thielemans stands out in a jazz crowd, not because of his height but because of his musical instrument.

Thielemans plays the harmonica and he is considered the foremost practitioner of the chromatic harmonica.

In his long career, the 79-year-old Thielemans has performed with jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis, pop artists like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel and the French balladeer Edith Piaf.

Thielemans' given name was Jean Baptiste. He borrowed the nickname "Toots" from Toots Mondello, a saxophonist with Benny Goodman's band. …
