Women to read 'Black Bottom'.

An all-female cast will give a staged reading Sunday evening of the award-winning play "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."

Singer/actress Cathryn McGill organized the reading and sought women for the parts, some of which are male characters.

"I had selfish reasons for doing that. There are some women in this town I think are brilliant and I haven't had the opportunity to be on stage with them," McGill said.

"It's a wonderful opportunity in a not-too-much-pressure situation."

Linda Piper, a well-known storyteller and actress, has the lead, Levee. The other main characters are the happy-go-lucky Toledo, played by Helena Washington, and the band leader Cutler, portrayed by Juba Clayton. …
