I see the old billboards every time I top Nine Mile Hill or head west on I-40. All it takes is a glance over at the frontage road, which used to be something much more grand than a frontage road. It used to be Route 66.


The billboards are always old in my mind. Even back in 1967, when I first came to New Mexico and drove by them almost every day, they looked old. They had a professional weathered look, the kind of thing you pay a decorator a lot of money to create today.


Small buildings dotted the roadside, each with a cage holding a forlorn rattler or two. …
