As anyone with half a brain will tell you, the most important day in February is not Valentine's Day (a convenient excuse to shower one's better half with love and gifts (a void I always thought Christmas filled very nicely), nor is it Presidents Day (Washington? Lincoln? What did they ever do?) or even Waitangi Day, (a New Zealand holiday of some sort, celebrated on Feb. 6, according to my trusty desk calendar).

Naturally, the single most pivotal day of the year's second month is Oscar Nomination Day! Now there is a day worth recognizing.

It's just on the other side of next week, you know, one of the year's seminal televison events. In a quick, efficient, 30-minute segment Tuesday morning at 6 from Los Angeles, the nominees for the 73rd Academy Awards (scheduled March 25) will be revealed. (Thank goodness TV hasn't yet figured out that they could actually make a load of cash moving them to prime time during a sweeps period).
