Q. Last week you recommended working several different kinds of "amendments" into the soil for creating a garden. What do all those different things do?

A. All of the products I suggested help the soil retain moisture, first off. Second, they'll help make the soil more fertile. Usually our soils are on the alkaline or "salty" side of the soil spectrum. Most growing things prefer a more neutral to acid environment in which to grow. By adding any of the amendments you'll be helping to correct the soil's makeup.

Peat moss will help retain gobs of moisture. It will acidify the soil, too, if enough is used. …
