* Graciela Iturbide's images of her native Mexico imaginatively portray ordinary people

"Images of the Spirit," an exhibit of photographs by Graciela Iturbide, opens this evening at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Iturbide, who worked with Manuel Alvarez Bravo and Henri Cartier-Bresson, brings a poet's eye to her imagery of the people and the customs of her native Mexico. Domestic and religious scenes, marketplaces and fiestas convey the magnificence of ordinary people in her imaginative and subtly symbolic photographs.

Born in Mexico City in 1942, Iturbide first studied filmmaking. After working with Manuel Alvarez Bravo in the early 1970s, she made photography her profession. …
