Grant of $825,000 To Aid Stop-Smoking Crusade.(New Mexico)

A new stop-smoking campaign will target uninsured and under-insured people in New Mexico with the help of a four-year, $825,000 grant.

"Smoking in New Mexico is the leading preventable cause of death," Dr. Dan Derksen said. "It accounts for more than 2,000 deaths a year."

Derksen, director of the Center for Community Partnerships at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, will oversee the grant. It was awarded by the American Legacy Foundation, an independent public-health foundation based in Washington, D.C., that aims to prevent and reduce smoking.

"The focus will be on the uninsured and Medicaid population, who really don't have a lot of programs available," Derksen said. …
