* New Mexico's success translating research into business draws overseas visitors

New Mexico continues to be ranked by national media as a high-tech mecca; now it has grabbed the attention of the international media as well.

Late last month, nine journalists visited Albuquerque from U.S. and foreign publications, including the large Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun; Berlin's largest daily newspaper, Berliner Zeitung; and internationally circulated Site Selection magazine.

They spoke with Sherman McCorkle, president of Technology Ventures Corp., and C. Paul Robinson, president of Sandia National Laboratories, about the state's success in transferring technologies developed in the government laboratories to the private sector.

"It's very exciting to learn scientists were able to leave (the labs) and work on their own interests and make money," said Berliner Zeitung reporter Stefan Elfenbein, who has a doctorate in political science. …
