If you're headed for the mountains, know your code. "Your Responsibility Code" is the seven safety rules of the ski slopes developed in the 1940s by Minot "Minnie" Dole, the founder of the National Ski Patrol System.

Today, the rules apply to telemarkers and snowboarders as well as downhill skiers, and following them is paramount to safety and etiquette on the hill.

"If just the first rule of the responsibility code was followed, it would reduce our accidents dramatically," says Cody Sheppard, patrol director at Santa Fe Ski Area. "Most people's intentions aren't bad, they're just not aware of the responsibility code. …
