It was a harmonic convergence of courage and training that makes all New Mexico proud of the men and women of the Truth or Consequences Volunteer Fire Department.

When an errant pickup truck touched off a massive propane leak that quickly became an inferno, TorC volunteers recognized that the worst was still ahead if a massive propane storage tank was allowed to grow hot enough to explode.

"In 30 years as a fireman, I've never seen a fireball like the one from that explosion," said Fire Chief Mike Tooley of the initial blast when a smaller tank on one of the delivery trucks exploded. "It was like an atom bomb had gone off," said Tooley, whose day job is publisher of the Truth or Consequences Herald. …
