Money Would Pay For Road Projects

SANTA FE House Transportation Committee Chairman Daniel Silva is pushing the politically unpopular idea of increasing the state's gasoline tax to help pay for 20 road construction projects in New Mexico.

Silva, a Democrat from Albuquerque, acknowledged that some of his colleagues might be reluctant to approve a 5-cent tax increase but said his bill would provide sorely needed money for the state's road fund.

"Some of the members are concerned about their re-election," Silva said during an interview Wednesday. "We need to look and see what's best for the state and not our own personal re-election efforts. …
