Mid-Pack Gets Rough After Crowded Start

ANAHEIM, Calif. Justin Buckelew, professional motorcycle racer, is used to being the hare.

When he was forced to play the tortoise Saturday night before a capacity crowd of 47,050 at Edison International Field, there was no storybook ending for the former Edgewood resident.

Shuffled to mid-pack gunning into a make-or-break first turn that was more congested than the Santa Ana Expressway at rush hour, Buckelew fell back immediately.

"I didn't get a good start. I just didn't get a good jump," said Buckelew, who had grabbed the $500 holeshot pot prize money awarded to the rider in front out of the first turn at the start of a race in each of the first three tour stops this season. …
