6th-Grader Outspells 81 4th- to 8th-Graders.(Schools)

Some of the words were easy. E-A-S-Y. Easy.

Some were not as sympathetic. S-Y-M-P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C. Sympathetic.

Eighty-two students started out Tuesday in the Moriarty Municipal Schools District Spelling Bee. At the end of the long event, Chris Luce, a sixth-grader at South Mountain Elementary School, was left standing on an empty stage at Edgewood Middle School, where the competition was held.

He won by correctly spelling herbivorous.

David Dow, a sixth-grader at Edgewood Elementary, finished second, and third place went to Ciera Santillanes, a seventh-grader at Moriarty Middle School.

The top three finishers earned trophies, and all participants got ribbons. …
