Suit Says Harassment Followed Complaints

A former Belen police detective is suing the city and others over claims he was retaliated against for blowing the whistle on alleged corruption and sexual harassment within the police department.

Mark Esparsen, a former narcotics detective for the Belen Police Department, filed a lawsuit in federal court last spring against the city, former Police Chief Lawrence Romero, former officer Gilbert Zamora and officer Nephey Valdez, who is still with the department.

A federal judge last month allowed Esparsen to amend his complaint to include more details about the alleged corruption and explain how they constituted racketeering, as his suit alleges. …
