Former Substitute Gets 2 Years at Grants Prison.

Judge Orders Drug Treatment

Former Espanola Middle School substitute teacher Yvette Martinez was ordered Wednesday to undergo a drug treatment program for two years at the New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility in Grants.

In an eloquent, unwritten speech, Martinez, 24, pleaded with state District Court Judge Stephen Pfeffer to send her to a 90-day treatment center in Rio Arriba County instead. Martinez, a resident of Cordova who has been in jail for more than two years, threw her head back and cried following the judge's sentencing.

"I would hope you would take this not as being forced but as an opportunity, (which) you say you are looking for," Pfeffer told Martinez. …
