Speakers Capture History in Stories.(Opinion)


When you're a high school student with your whole life ahead of you, the history of all that stuff before you can seem pretty abstract, pretty dry.

Area teachers can put some flesh on the bare bones of recent history with speakers who lived through the Great Depression, battles of World War II and Korea and the Holocaust.

Rio Rancho High School counselor Larry Morrell, who served in Korea with the Marines, directs a speakers bureau of 35 veterans. Warner Gellert, founder of the New Mexico Holocaust and Intolerance Museum, offers a similar program with speakers who focus on the Holocaust and intolerance. Morrell and Gellert both note that World War II and Holocaust survivors are nearing the end of their lifespans this oral history has a limited shelf life. …
