Udall Seeking Help From Bush

Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., wants President Bush to push for $70 million to pay the claims of workers sickened by decades-old uranium mining.

Udall, along with his cousin, Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., and fellow Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, wrote a letter Wednesday to Bush urging the president to include the funding in his 2001 supplemental appropriations proposal.

Presidents typically work out supplemental appropriations submissions, or short-term budgets, each spring to pay for either unforeseen or rising costs not covered in their earlier budgets.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act needs just such funding, Udall said in an interview Wednesday. …
