Less than half a year ago, Wen Ho Lee pleaded guilty to a single felony count of mishandling classified information and was released from solitary confinement with a federal judge's apology.

The case against Lee had crumbled when a key government witness changed his testimony. In retrospect, it also became clear that federal agents investigating possible Chinese espionage had targeted Lee prematurely, and that reporting on Lee's case, particularly by the New York Times, had been unbalanced.

In a reprise of its coverage of the case published Sunday and Monday, the New York Times called the evidence against Lee "fragmentary" and "often ambiguous" and acknowledged that the story was "propelled by the divisive politics of Clinton-era Washington. …
