Insurance Firm Sued for Damages

A 2-year-old lawsuit against a Minnesota insurance company by a Santa Fe newspaper and the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government over public record disclosure has been thrown out.

State District Judge James Hall, in a Jan. 27 summary opinion, dismissed a 1998 lawsuit brought by The New Mexican newspaper against Northland Insurance Co. and the city of Santa Fe.

Dismissal of the case, which sought a court order prohibiting the city of Santa Fe and its insurers from entering into agreements to keep secret awards paid in lawsuit settlements, came in a ruling that said the state Public Records Act doesn't apply to private companies. …
