Man Accused of Hacking Remains Free for Now.

Accused computer hacker Jerome Heckenkamp, of Los Alamos, is a free man again, after spending a scant two hours in jail and posting not a dime toward his $50,000 bond.

Heckenkamp intended to turn himself over federal authorities last Thursday and stay in jail until he either raised his bail money or his trial on 16 federal felony counts concluded.

Instead, he was booked, jailed, and released all in one afternoon.

"They said they didn't have any legal right to hold me," Heckenkamp told the Journal from his home in Los Alamos, where he worked as computer technician at the Los Alamos National Laboratory until he was fired several weeks after he was accused of computer hacking. …
