* Incumbent Carla Lopez loses close race in District 3

After six grueling years inside the Santa Fe Public Schools, board President Carla Lopez lost her seat Tuesday to the same man who challenged her four years ago.

Martin Lujan upset Lopez by a mere 39 votes in very light voting, according to unofficial results. Turnout, according to unofficial results, was less than 6 percent.

"It's been an honor to serve and it was a darn hard job," Lopez said, noting it is a volunteer position.

In 1997, Lopez beat Lujan by 56 votes.

Lujan said he worked hard to oust Lopez by going door to door every weekend.

"It pays off to listen," he said. "We know what has gone on in the district, and the tallies show it."

The other two Santa Fe board incumbents won re-election.

Marcy Litzenberg, who was appointed to the board last year, received 957 votes to contender Robb Young Hirsch's 527. …
