* Transfer Michael Brunker could be the impact player that New Mexico needs

It's all about potential for Michael Brunker.

A highly touted wide receiver from Grossmont (Calif.) College, Brunker signed a letter of intent in December to play for the University of New Mexico football team.

The 6-foot, 2-inch, 175-pound Brunker, who's already enrolled at UNM and will participate in spring practice beginning Monday, is among a 26-player recruiting class the Lobos hope to announce today, the first day that high school players can sign national letters of intent.

Brunker is among five players who already have signed. The Lobos hope to receive 21 more letters today. Though schools can sign only 25 players a year, UNM has 26 with the intention of bringing one player in next January if all its players qualify academically.

Brunker says he chose New Mexico over Utah because of the Lobos' potential. Even when Kansas State and Arkansas offered scholarships after he signed, he had no regrets, because of UNM's potential.

"The potential here and the coaches made it seem like they wanted to make a difference," Brunker says. …
