* Animal-rights group says Misty is a 'time bomb,' but handler defends animal that killed a zoologist in 1983

A local animal-rights group is renewing objections to the presence of Misty, an elephant that killed a zoologist in 1983, and other animals at the Shriners' circus this weekend in Albuquerque.

Misty is one of four Asian elephants performing with the Jordan World Circus. Over similar objections from Animal Protection of New Mexico Inc., she performed at the circus last year without incident. She doesn't give rides, organizers said.

Linda Roberson, an elephant handler with the company that owns Misty and the other three elephants, acknowledged in a telephone interview that "Misty is an animal which killed somebody 17 or 18 years ago," but she said the elephants in the show are safe. …
