Critics Say Taxpayers Might Foot the Bill

A bill that would make it easier for some property owners to subdivide their land narrowly cleared its first hurdle Tuesday.

The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee endorsed the proposed amendments to the state subdivision act on a 5-4 vote.

Rep. James G. Taylor, D-Albuquerque, said he introduced the bill primarily to help families who divide their land into two parcels and then need to sell both pieces of property.

Current law requires them to go through the sometimes-costly subdivision review process if the second sale is within five years of the division. …
