The Rio Rancho Veterans Honor Guard on Sunday remembered four World War II heroes and area veterans who had died in 2000.

On Feb. 3, 1943, a cruise ship that had been converted to a troop carrier was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine in the North Atlantic. As the ship began to sink, four military chaplains handed out life vests and helped survivors into lifeboats. When they ran out of life vests, the chaplains gave up their own to troops. The chaplains were last seen praying together on the deck as the ship went down. They and 600 others died.
