Bridge Unsafe, Fed Official Says.

Director: Rebuild Old Span Near Pecos

A 40-plus-year-old bridge on N.M. 63 between Rowe and Pecos should be rebuilt as soon as possible, said an official with the Federal Highway Administration.

Although the bridge part of a controversial and much-delayed reconstruction project is not condemned, its railing fails to meet current safety standards and its narrow width poses a hazard, according to Reuben Thomas, New Mexico division director of the federal agency.

"In its present condition, the bridge is both structurally deficient and functionally obsolete," Thomas wrote Jan. 29 to Duane Alire, superintendent of the Pecos National Historical Park. …
