SANTA FE A Republican lawmaker from Clayton wants the state to pay $1.5 million toward a memorial to recognize thousands of American Indians forced from their homelands in the early 1860s.

"It's a pretty sad time in our history," Rep. Brian Moore said Monday.

Moore said he is working on a bill that would provide money needed to finish the Bosque Redondo Memorial to honor the Navajo and Mescalero Apache Indians.
