Fellow Democrat Feuds With Romero

SANTA FE Sen. Shannon Robinson took some potshots on the Senate floor Monday at fellow Albuquerque Democrat Richard Romero, who was elected president pro tem in an alliance with Republicans.

"If we'd had a straight-party ticket ballot, Senator Aragon would still be pro tem," Robinson said, as the Senate debated a Republican measure to get rid of straight-party ticket voting in New Mexico. "We wouldn't have this horrible coalition that's created all these problems."

Robinson was referring to Romero's election as pro tem earlier this session over longtime Senate leader Sen. Manny Aragon, D-Albuquerque. The coup came when Romero and two other Democrats joined with all 18 Senate Republicans to oust Aragon, who had been the pro tem choice of the Senate Democratic caucus. …
