Asthma coalition wins grant.(Health)

An Albuquerque coalition that has launched a grass-roots attack on asthma in children has gotten a $150,000 grant to support its efforts.

And coalition members are hoping the planning grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which was announced Tuesday, will be the harbinger of more money later to track, treat and prevent asthma attacks in Albuquerque's children.

"This could serve as a model for the state. It truly is a collaboration," said Dr. Robert Sapien, associate professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics at the University of New Mexico.

The American Lung Association of New Mexico is the lead agency in the project, in collaboration with the city, state, UNM, Albuquerque Public Schools, Community Health Partnership, Presbyterian Healthcare Services and First Choice Community Healthcare. …
