Plan Weighs Busy Routes, Job Centers.(Metro & New Mexico)

A report looking at the future of mass transit in Albuquerque has identified several corridors where a huge investment in trains or buses could pay off.

Potential corridors, according to the report, include Central from Coors to Louisiana; Montgomery from Eubank to around Sixth Street; Louisiana from Gibson to Montgomery; N.M. 528; and a route from Central to Montano, somewhere between Sixth Street and Broadway.

Several factors were considered: potential links between employment centers and major residential areas; routes essential to local commerce; and routes that get heavy traffic.

Completion of a new transit system along the routes could be decades away, but Bruce Rizzieri, head of development at the Albuquerque Transit Department, said design work and preliminary engineering could begin as soon as five years from now. …
