Pets Were Killed In SWAT Raid

Bernalillo County and the city of Belen have agreed to pay $15,000 to a South Valley mother and son whose pet boxers, Casper and Wimpy, were killed by county sheriff's SWAT team members during a raid.

James C. Ellis, one attorney who helped settle the federal civil lawsuit filed by Johnny and Geraldine Herrera, said the 1999 raid in search of one of Johnny Herrera's friends a Belen shooting suspect resulted in no arrests. Johnny Herrera maintains he was holding his young dogs when SWAT members began shooting; sheriff's reports make no mention of the boxers being restrained and said the dogs were being aggressive. …
